PREPARATION, INTENTION & INTEGRATION

Prepare the Body.
Steady the Mind.
Open the Spirit.

Preparation helps you arrive physically ready, mentally grounded and able to meet the work with humility.

This page guides the journey before, during and after retreat so that an experience can become something you are capable of living.

Begin with the practices that fit your health, circumstances and current stage of development.

WHY PREPARATION BEGINS BEFORE ARRIVAL

The Retreat Begins Before the First Ceremony

Preparation is not simply a list of foods to avoid. It is the process of readying the body, steadying the mind and opening the spirit for what may be encountered.

Beginning approximately 30 days before arrival gives you time to reduce stimulation, refine routines and notice the patterns already shaping your life.

Medical screening is compulsory. Other practices are guidance and must be adapted responsibly to your health and circumstances.

Bring the Skills You Already Carry

No one arrives as a complete novice. Skills from work, relationships, creativity, sport and ordinary life can support this process.

Mokan’s engineering background strengthened analytical thinking, problem-solving and the disciplined maintenance of his own equilibrium. Your own history may contain similar resources.

Ask what already teaches you attention, patience, courage, joy or recovery. Preparation becomes stronger when it is personal enough to be lived.

THE THREE DIMENSIONS

The Body

Reduce unnecessary strain. Support sleep, movement, nourishment and the medical agreements required for safe participation.

The Mind

Reduce noise. Notice expectation, fear, control and the thought patterns that may follow you into ceremony.

The Spirit

Approach the plants, the lineage and your own inner life with humility, respect and willingness. No borrowed belief system is required.

Preparation Is Not Perfection.
It Is the Practice of Becoming Available.

PREPARING THE BODY

Reduce Unnecessary Noise

MERAYA recommends gradually reducing caffeine, refined sugar, alcohol and other stimulants before arrival. The retreat diet excludes sugar, salt, oil, spices and similar ingredients.

Arriving without acute caffeine or sugar withdrawal can make it easier to focus on the process rather than detoxification.

Longer dietas traditionally use a much stricter container. A traditional apprenticeship may last three months or longer, and the first two or three weeks can be a period of physical and psychological adjustment.

Fasting, Ketosis and Movement

MERAYA has observed that low-carbohydrate or ketogenic preparation may reduce hunger, craving and distraction for some people. Shipibo-Konibo curanderos in longer dieta may live on one simple meal per day without the same hunger experienced at the beginning.

This is experiential guidance, not a medical claim or a cancer treatment. Fasting and ketosis are not appropriate for everyone and should be individualized with suitable medical support. The work of Stephen Harrod Buhner may offer further context, but it does not replace clinical advice.

Walking, swimming, yoga and appropriate strength training can help the body arrive with greater steadiness.

PREPARING THE MIND

Reduce High-Stimulation Inputs

The mind also needs preparation. A deliberate reduction in social media, constant news, television, alcohol, highly stimulating food and other instant-reward habits can reveal how attention has been trained.

This is sometimes called a dopamine detox. The useful principle is simple: reduce compulsive stimulation and rebuild the ability to remain present with quieter tasks.

Choose What Nourishes Attention

Replace some passive consumption with books, documentaries, podcasts, guided meditation, journaling or other material that supports reflection.

Spend time in nature and solitude. Stay connected with people who support grounded growth, and create distance from dynamics that repeatedly pull you into fear or negativity.

The aim is not to create a perfect mind. It is to recognize what influences it.

PREPARING THE SPIRIT

Build a Daily Relationship With Listening

Set aside time each day for grounding, silence, prayer, meditation or another practice that helps you hear beneath immediate reaction.

Spiritual preparation does not require adopting someone else’s cosmology. It asks for respect, humility and the willingness to listen without surrendering discernment.

Work With Dreams Carefully

Keep a dream journal. On waking, record the imagery before interpreting it, then write a short summary of what you believe it may represent.

You may invite Ayahuasca or the plant you will diet into the dream space before arrival. Plant teachings are often experienced through metaphor, and those metaphors are shaped by personal history and belief.

Treat the dream as information. Do not force it into certainty or hand its meaning entirely to someone else.

INTENTION

Choose a Direction

An intention brings the heart and mind into alignment. It may be a quality—love, courage, vulnerability, peace, strength, community—or a question you are ready to meet honestly.

Look beneath the surface desire. A new career may represent fulfilment. A relationship goal may reveal a need for belonging, self-respect or truth.

Use affirmative language. Move from “stop being afraid” toward “meet life with courage.”

Release the Demand for an Outcome

An intention gives direction. An expectation tries to control what must happen.

Write the qualities you want to embody, identify practical actions, examine beliefs that contradict the intention and revisit it through journaling or meditation.

Intentions can change as you learn. Set the direction, take the next honest action and remain willing to receive an answer you did not predict.

Common healing themes include fear, lack, rejection, abandonment, anger and resentment. One clear intention can open several connected layers.

An Intention Offers Direction.
It Does Not Control the Journey.

MEETING CHALLENGES

Triggers

A trigger creates a moment of choice. It can reactivate trauma, resentment or a limiting belief, but it does not remove your ability to pause and choose a response.

Other people can sometimes reveal an unhealed pattern. That does not mean every harmful action is merely your projection, nor does ownership require self-blame.

Notice what was activated, ground the body, take responsibility for your response and decide what boundary or healing the moment requires.

Tests and New Responses

A challenge may arrive with less emotional charge than a trigger, yet still test whether a new way of being has become available.

People rarely embody a new response perfectly the first time. Awareness may come after the old pattern. With practice, the pause grows and a different choice becomes possible.

When supporting someone else, questions and personal stories often create less resistance than telling them what they should believe.

Beliefs

Many beliefs are inherited from family and culture before we have the capacity to examine them.

Ceremony may loosen an old belief and reveal a new one. The new belief should not automatically be treated as final truth. It may be a useful bridge for the next stage of growth.

Test every insight through behaviour, consequence, compassion and ordinary life.

INTEGRATION

Bring the Teaching Into Ordinary Life

The retreat environment creates distance from ordinary pressure. Returning home removes that protection.

Continue the practices that helped you prepare: rest, nourishing food, nature, journaling, meditation, movement and supportive community. Reintroduce restricted foods, stimulation and relationships gradually according to the guidance you receive.

Preparation asks, “How will I enter?” Integration asks, “How will I live what was revealed?”

Protect What Is Still Forming

New insight can be sensitive. Give it time before exposing it to people who are likely to dismiss, debate or define the experience for you.

This is not permanent secrecy or isolation. It is temporary protection while you learn what the experience means in practice.

Stay connected with the MERAYA community and trusted people who can support reflection without increasing dependency.

INTEGRATION IN PRACTICE

The First Weeks

Avoid irreversible decisions immediately after retreat. Do not rush to sell a business, end a relationship or radically change your life while the experience is still settling.

If a conversation escalates, take a pause. Ground, reflect and return when you can communicate from greater clarity.

Tell close family or loved ones that you may need additional space, quiet or rest after returning.

Longer-Term Embodiment

Find a small, trusted community. Spend time in nature. Read material that deepens understanding. Continue meditation, healthy food and the practices that keep you connected to what matters.

Insight alone is not integration. Repeated behaviour is what turns a teaching into a way of living.

The Ceremony May Reveal the Pattern.
Integration Is Where You Learn to Live Differently.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions About Preparation and Integration

Preparation and integration are not separate from the retreat. They are the practices that make the experience usable.

Thirty days offers useful space to reduce stimulants, refine routines and clarify intentions, but your medical screening instructions always take priority.

The medical screening requirements are compulsory. Other preparation practices are guidance and should be adapted responsibly to your health and circumstances.

Choose a clear direction rooted in how you want to live or relate, then hold it with flexibility. An intention can evolve as you learn.

Continue the practices that supported preparation: rest, nature, journaling, meditation, nourishing food, supportive community and gradual re-entry.

Give important decisions time. Let the experience settle before making irreversible changes to work, relationships or living arrangements.

Pause, ground and seek the wider pattern without blaming yourself. Use your support network, and seek professional help when the intensity exceeds what you can safely hold alone.

Pack simply. Laundry is available, and the current program-specific guide should be your final reference.
